Soprano Sara Hershkowitz is a native of Los Angeles, California and is the recipient of two nominations in Opernwelt for Singer of the Year, for her portrayal of Zaide in the German Premiere of Mozart/Czernowin’s Zaide Adama, and also for Donna Anna in Don Giovanni. As a principle artist at the Bremen Opera, she sang such roles as Sophie in Der Rosenkavalier, Gretel in Hänsel und Gretel, Donna Anna in Don Giovanni, Adele in Die Fledermaus, Konstanze in Die Entführung aus dem Serail, Arminda in La Finat Giardiniera, and the title role in Mozart’s Zaide.
Upcoming engagements in 2017-18 include Ligeti’s Grand Maccabre with the Noord Netherlands Orchestra, her debut with New Orleans Opera as Euridice in Offenbach’s Orpheus in the Underworld. and a return to the Wuppertal Opernhaus the four heroines Olympia/Antonia/Giulietta/Stella in Offenbach’s Les Contes D’Hoffmann. Next season she will make her debut with Oper Basel as Claire Claremont in the world premiere of Kreatur. In 2016-17 Sara also performed Zerbinetta in Strauss’ Ariadne auf Naxos for the Nordnorsk Opera og Symfonieorkester in Norway, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony with the Brandenburgisches Staatsorchester in Frankfurt and Berlin, An Evening of Spanish Song at the Muzikzentrum De Bijloke in Gent, Belgium.
In 2015 Ms. Hershkowitz celebrated a great success in her debut at the Maggio Musical Fiorentino, as the Governess in Benjamin Britten’s Turn of the Screw. In the same season she made debuts at the Theater an der Wien as Servilia in Gluck’s La Clemenza di Tito, in Mexico City in Telemann´s Ino, at the Palacio de Bellas Artes, and as Deijanira in Kurt Weill’s Royal Palace at the Kurt Weill Festival in Dessau. Further performances in 2015 include Autonoe in Henze’s The Bassarids, and Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony at the Konzerthaus Berlin.
In 2014 Ms. Hershkowitz appeared at the Drottningholm Court Theater in Sweden in the role of Ismene, in Mozart’s Mitridate re di ponto, and Konstanze in Mozart’s Entführung aus dem Serail, under the baton of Michael Hofstetter, in Giessen. Further highlights include the Fauré Requiem with the NDR Symphony Orchestra with Thomas Hengelbrock, and the Snow Owl/Alcmena in Philip Glass’s The Civil Wars with Dennis Russell Davies, at the Holland Festival. She has sung the Queen of the Night in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte at the Hamburgisches Staatsoper, the New Israeli Opera and the Deutsches National Theater Weimar. In 2013 she appeared with the Hong Kong Philharmonic as Madame Herz in Mozart’s Der Schauspieldirektor, and at Teatro Communale di Bologna as the Governess in Benjamin Britten’s Turn of the Screw.
Ms. Hershkowitz is a frequent guest with David Stern’s Paris-based baroque ensemble Opera Fuoco, with whom she has performed the title role in the recently re-discovered J.C. Bach Opera Zanaida, which toured the Leipzig Bach Festival, the Wiener Konzerthaus, Paris Cité de la Musique, and the Teatru Manuel in Malta, and was recorded on the French CD label Zig-Zag Territoires. Further roles with Opera Fuoco include Donna Anna in Don Giovanni, Arminda in La Finta Giardiniera, and Madame Herz in Der Schauspieldirektor.
Sara was a member of the Salzburger Festspiele Young Singers Project, the Academie Lyrique at Aix-en-Provence, received her B.A. From the Manhattan School of Music, and was the winner of the Audience Award of the Klassik Mania Vocal Competition in Vienna.
